February sees the publication of my story “A Woman of Light and Steel” in Jupiter magazine.
Jupiter, edited by Ian Redman, has grown steadily as a publication, earning strong reviews from SF Revue and other places. Jupiter has published Lavie Tidhar, Eric Brown, John Davies, Jon Wallace, Patrick Mohan and many more. It’s a good little magazine, and I recommend a subscription.

A few months ago I entered the Nova Short Story competition, run by the sffsa. Nova is the magazine element of the Science Fiction and Fantasy South Africa group. The section of the competition I entered was judged by Arthur C. Clarke winner Lauren Beukes.
Though I did not win a place, I made the final cut and earned a spot on the Highly Recommended list.

My first sale of 2014 is a reprint.
My story “Repeat Performance”, first published in the Anthology of European SF last year, will be translated into Romanian and reprinted in the February issue of the Romanian Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine.
How cool is that?
Thanks to Cristian Tamas at Europa SF.
I am just so amazed at how well the Anthology of European SF is being received. It is a great book, by the way–and I’m not just saying that. There are many great writers in this book and every story is unique and wonderful.
Strange Horizons calls the Anthology of European SF “…an anthology so packed with high-quality fiction” and state ” the other remarkable thing about this anthology is how good it is. “
About my story: “Carmelo Rafala’s “Repeat Performances” has a rich, fascinating world and a satisfyingly twisty plot, replete with unpredictably human characters. “

I am pleased to announce that I have been appointed Managing Editor of Abyss & Apex magazine. Abyss & Apex is one of the most consistently brilliant online magazines, brought to prominence across the ether by the talents of Wendy Delmater, Editor-in-Chief. Abyss & Apex has published such amazing talents as Tony Pi, Aliette De Bodard, and a host of new and upcoming writers.
The transition will be a slow one as I learn the duties assigned to the role, and Wendy will remain on hand as publisher, publicist, book reviewer, and much more.
I am very excited about working for a magazine that I have read and admired for years. It’s a surreal feeling to be in such a position. I am really looking forward to 2013 . Aren’t you?

Once again, I have received an Honorable Mention for the Writers of the Future Award for the first quarter, 2012. My previous Honorable Mention was for last year.
Of course I would have loved to have won, but an Honorable Mention is a nice place to be. It’s better than no mention at all. And having received it twice now informs me that at least I am not going backward in my writing, which is aways good to know.
