SCI-FI Art from Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner is a fine artist and his work has graced the pages and covers of many publications, including Interzone magazine. His fantastic work can also be seen on the covers of books I have edited for Immersion Press. You can go see his work and purchase what you like at the following sites.

Honorable Mention and Works in Progress

Happy to say that my story “Song for the Asking” has received an Honorable Mention in The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Thirty-Third Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Dozois.  You can purchase a copy of the book by clicking on the title above. Lots of great stories in these collections.

Works in Progress: I am at the halfway point on a novella, and I have two short stories in the works. I also have the notes and framework for two more novellas. I hope this becomes a very prolific year.

Fantastic Review of The World and the Stars

Prominent genre review site SF Crowsnest has published a glorious review of the anthology The World and the Stars. The review praises the editor, Chris Butler (who did a smashing job, by the way), and calls out some highlights of the book.

The reviewer calls my story, “The Madness of Pursuit, the Desire of Lonely Hearts“, as a “fabulous adventure”. He goes on to say that “Creating a situation where…technology still allows for an old-fashioned maritime adventure is quite a skill and this story pulls it off nicely.”  Well, thank you, Mr Jones!   I have the Montpelier Writers Group to thank for helping me shape this into a better story.

A lot of great stories are in this book. Buy it now! Ask for at your local bookstore or get it at Amazon. There is something in it for everyone. You won’t be disappointed.

Nova Short Story Competition – Results

A few months ago I entered the Nova Short Story competition, run by the sffsa. Nova is the magazine element of the Science Fiction and Fantasy South Africa group. The section of the competition I entered was judged by Arthur C. Clarke winner Lauren Beukes.

Though I did not win a place, I made the final cut and earned a spot on the Highly Recommended list.

Check out the winners and other authors whose work was recommended at the website link above or  click here:  Nova Short Story.

“Repeat Performance” Gets A Romanian Translation

My first sale of 2014 is a reprint.

My story “Repeat Performance”, first published in the Anthology of European SF last year, will be translated into Romanian and reprinted in the February issue of the Romanian Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine.

How cool is that?

Thanks to Cristian Tamas at Europa SF.

2014 — Happy New Year!

I didn’t realise how stressful 2013 was until it was over. Wow! I hope that 2014 is a better year. I have some changes I am making, as well as some new approaches to life and work.

(Some good news that finished out the year was that an older story of mine, Replay, currently in the anthology ‘Cuckoo’ at Anthology Builder.com, was mentioned in that site’s December blog. So go by the book!)

This year I want to finish those short stories and get cracking on two novels, as well as finish that children’s illustrated book. Can it be done? It can if I get my head down, implement those changes, and be sure I get enough rest.

Here’s to 2014!

I pray you have a good new year!

Strange Horizons Reviews Anthology of European SF

I am just so amazed at how well the Anthology of European SF is being received. It is a great book, by the way–and I’m not just saying that. There are many great writers in this book and every story is unique and wonderful.

Strange Horizons calls the Anthology of European SF “…an anthology so packed with high-quality fiction” and state ” the other remarkable thing about this anthology is how good it is. “

About my story: “Carmelo Rafala’s “Repeat Performances” has a rich, fascinating world and a satisfyingly twisty plot, replete with unpredictably human characters. “
